The “Sport in Post-Disaster Intervention” seminar will occur from 1 until 7 November 2008 in Rheinsberg, Germany.
This is the second year that ICSSPE is hosting the event, which provides practical training for disaster responders to be able to develop psychosocial sport programs in disaster-affected communities.
The sessions provide both theoretical and practical training components, combined with a multi-disciplinary perspective on how to incorporate sport and physical activity into a disaster relief setting. They include: emergency relief and reconstruction; psychology in emergency relief; didactics in sports; occupational therapy; inclusive activities; ways of developing activities without any equipment; examples of good practice and much more.
Speakers include experts from around the globe with strong experience in disaster relief and who have contributed to recovery efforts after emergencies such as the tsunami in South East Asia, Hurricane Katrina and earthquakes in Iran and Pakistan.
Seminar participants will be disaster relief professionals who want to incorporate sport and physical activity into their efforts along with those with a sport background who want to expand their projects into the rapidly growing sport and development arena. Professionals will mix with students, researchers and others to learn from experts and each other by sharing their experiences in assisting communities to overcome trauma and participate in training sessions designed to teach skills that can have a substantial impact on an affected community.
“Sport in Post-Disaster Intervention” is held under the leadership of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education and is financed with assistance of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (Germany), in co-operation with Kennesaw State University (USA), the Fürst Donnersmarck-Foundation, the German Red Cross and Freie Universität Berlin.
