Summary of ICSSPE International Year Activities

Since the proclamation of the 2005 International Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE), ICSSPE and its almost 300 member organisations and institutions have contributed a great deal to achieving the goals of this special year and to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
Initiatives such as the promotion of gender equity were supported by us at the International Conference on Sport, Women and Leadership, Berlin, in December 2004 and at the International Conference on „Effecting Social Change through Women’s Leadership in Sport“ in Atlanta, USA, October 2005. We also encouraged the promotion of co-operation between Governments and NGOs in the area of “Sport & Development” at the International Conference in Bad Boll, Germany, held in February 2005.
ICSSPE played an active role in highlighting the health related initiatives as a partner in the “Sport and Health” International conference in Hammamet , Tunisa, March 2005.
A special project by ICSSPE and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Germany was also developed to provide a hands-on seminar on “Rehabilitation through Physical Activity and Sport in the Tsunami affected area of Southeast Asia”, held in October 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Important initiatives to help promote physical education and sport in education included our support in the promotion and dissemination of the international project on “Sport and Physical Education in Education (SpinEd)”. Continuing this support ICSSPE also organised the 2nd World Summit on Physical Education in Magglingen, Switzerland in December 2005, which was held in conjunction with the culminating event of the International Year of Sport and Physical Education.
All these initiatives were based on close co-operation between ICSSPE and the Special Adviser Adolf Ogi, and encouraged new partnerships between UN agencies, Governments and NGO’s with a strong view of ensuring sustainable developments for the years to come.
